about

written by John Prine and Pat McLaughlin and appears on his album Fair and Square.

From the album “Fair and Square” the first John Prine album I owned. Lost it somewhere in a hire car in Germany or maybe Canada. This album was a constant on Back of the Moon’s tours of Canada, America and Europe. It was hard to pick one song from an album that means so much to me. When I close my eyes certain songs remind me of the sun coming up two hours south of Hamburg on the Autobahn, of driving south and west across Indiana and into the Bible Belt rushing to an afternoon show in Memphis and of crossing the prairie into Edmonton leaving the mountains behind and watching the nodding donkeys nod in the low evening sun.

Taking a Walk became our family lockdown anthem. In the first few days before we heard of John Prine death we listened to it, learned it and made video of it which we put on YouTube. We tuned Lucy’s electric guitar to open D so she just had to strum along. It helped us through the first few weeks.

It was a strange co-incidence the night that John Prine died we sat in the garden (at a safe distance) with our neighbours and everyone sang John’s songs and told stories of the shows we’d seen. Despite us knowing that everyone played guitar and sang in our tenement block it was the first time we’d actually got together to play music. We didn’t know he’d died at that point. Thank you John Prine for bringing us all together.

lyrics

A man came to our house
I believe it was yesterday
I would have invited him in
But I didn't have a lot to say

His anticipation of me opening the door
Outweighed my apprehension as it never had before
And drove my concentration
Right through that hardwood floor

I'm taking a walk
I'm going outside
I'm taking a walk
I'm just getting by

There's a girl in the White House
I don't even know her name
Her disheveled appearance
Speaks volumes of shame

It's an embarrassing situation
But a situation just the same
The way she walks on others
And never takes the blame
Upsets my constitution
Beyond its mortal frame

I'm taking a walk
I'm going outside
I'm watching the birds
I'm just getting by

Found a card in the pocket
Of my worn-out overalls
From a girl in Cedar Rapids
Now residing in Idaho Falls

I wish you could have been there
When she opened up the door
And looked me in the face
Like she never did before
I felt about as welcome
As a Wal-Mart Superstore

I'm taking a walk
I'm going outside
I'm taking a walk
I don't need a ride

I'm watching the birds
Flying so high
